Project-based migrations include:

PLANNING
Planning develops an overall definition for a migration project and establishes a clear and common understanding throughout the engagement team.  This stage develops an overall blueprint for the project, which typically includes business justification, migration strategy, project scope definition, roles and responsibilities, approach for effective communications and project plan.  Here are the specifics to be addressed:
  1. Identify the key user communities and relevant business owners/representatives
  2. Review the final deliverables and make sure everyone is in agreement
  3. Review the information necessary to be derived from the users or source systems – clearly identify the gap between what is known versus what needs to be defined as part of this process.
  4. Review/refine the roles and responsibilities of each key constituent and an effective means of communications
  5. Review/refine the project plan to address the gap of information required.
MIGRATION SCOPING
The de facto approach to migration scoping efforts is to define the source data stores, typically by survey, to catalogue the data and content scheduled for migration. This approach certainly has its value, but as experience dictates, this information is not sufficient to define the migration scope.

Valiance recommended approach quantifies data migration scope from the top down, defining data sources, related business processes, migration risks, and external system interfaces. Valiance also takes a “bottom up” approach examining each of the identified data sources in detail using our proprietary tools to review the source objects with respect to the destination.
